International schools of Thailand

There are over 150 international schools in Thailand and can be a daunting task to choose the right one for your child. There are many factors that may impact your decision, it can be related to the price, location, the standard of education, taught curriculum, provided activities, and so on. Children need the right environment to develop and it“s important to find the right one that is a fit for your child. Our consultants have in-depth knowledge of international Thai schools, the Thai education system and how international students can make the transition from school life overseas to learning in Thailand. We also prepared a brief overview of international schools at all levels in Thailand and how they can be divided:

- by ranking;
- by curriculum;
- by costs

Ranking status. All international schools in Thailand can be divided into Tiers, however there is no clear agreement on what constitutes each of the tiers as it is largely subjective and depends on various factors, and not always a clear indicator of a school’s quality. For example, some Tier 3 schools can provide a better education and facilities than some schools among the Tier 2 level. It“s important to consider all the sides and take into account all the factors before making a decision which school to prefer.

- Tier 1 schools (high-tier) are considered the best of the best. Such schools have multiple international accreditation and will be members of CIS Council of International Schools, or CIS, and/or New England Association of Schools and Colleges, or NEASC. Quality of education given is at the highest level with highly qualified and experienced teachers predominately from Western countries. Tuition fees at Tier 1 schools tend to be high, ranging from 400,000 TBH to almost 1,000,000 TBH a year.

- Tier 2 schools (mid-tier) are typically owned by a group of investors. Schools of this tier will be coordinated by the national ONESQA body and will have at least one international accreditation. Teaching is still at the high level with teachers coming from all around the world, the international student mix is good however with majority of students being Thais. Fees vary, and in general are a little lower than at Tier 1 schools, ranging between 200,000 TBH to 800,000 TBH per year.

- Tier 3 schools (low tier) will usually hold only local ONESQA accreditation and will consists of non-Western teaching staff with majority of students being Thai. Fees are much lower at this level, ranging from 80,000 TBH to 300,000 TBH per year.

Curriculum. There are 4 main categories for the international curriculum in Thailand: the International Baccalaureate (IB), British curricula and American curricula. There are also some schools which cater to specific nationalities, such as French, Russian, German, Japanese, Australian etc. British curricula schools are the most popular in Thailand followed by American curricula schools. IB schools and programs are very good if the job takes you places and and there is a high chance moving to different country at some stage in your child“s education. IB is an international curriculum which is recognized around the world and ensures an increased adaptability and mobility for the students. Tuition fees. For many, a major concern when choosing an international school are the cost of tuition. What costs can you expect to pay? Fees at the differing schools vary widely and may also consist of a multitude of other fees for various things, some of which compulsary or optional. Below, we provide a glimpse on tuition fees at the most popular international schools in Thailand to give you an idea of the price ranges:

It“s important to note that the education system in Thailand is broken down into 5 different stages: Kindergarten (4-6 years old), Elementary (7-12 years old), Lower-Secondary (13-15 years old), Upper-Secondary (16-18 years old), Higher Education 18+, the price above indicates average annual tuition fees at the lowest (typically nursery) and highest (upper-secondary) levels and do not include Admission fees, Registration fees, lunch fees, student uniforms, contribution to the school fund, transportation that you additionally may need to pay. There are several schools that offer „sibling discount“ for the enrollment of a second child to the school.
